I am neither prince nor troll
nor toad
but time itself.
Campbell McGrath, from the poem “The Toad”
It’s the excitement of misunderstanding. The helplessness, the restriction, the irrevocable loss of virtue. The smoldering, the battle of wits, the time away, the time together, the curse and the joy of family relations. It’s walking through a muddy field and showing up breathless. It’s the money, too, and the status, and the leap into the arms of a toad.
