but how would you like it
if you never knew from one day to the next
if you were going to spend it
striding around like a vivid god,
your shoulders in the clouds,
or sitting down there amidst the wallpaper,
staring straight ahead with your little plastic face?
(Billy Collins, from “Some Days”)
It’s a joke, and it’s not funny, that everything that happens, happens inside our heads. Sight, sound, touch, love, scorn, desire, music, pictures, tv, social networks, circles, squares, conversations, situations, punches and hugs. The brain gets the first crack.
So what if your brain isn’t working right, isn’t on your team? What if your brain is declared incompetent?
Here’s this guy, he’s got plenty to lose. Here he is. He just threw up into the toilet. Well, gee, that’s gross. He is in his underwear, or I don’t know, it almost looks like a diaper, which is a good idea for a guy like this. He can’t quit drinking. He’s a drunk.
He can’t quit. (But then he does.)
(Jeff Bridges in Crazy Heart; see Notes for more info.)
